"The Impact of Inequity"- Stacy Scott, PhD, MPA
Moderator Beth Cardina
Throughout the history of America, blacks were blamed for the black and white health disparities – viewed as susceptible to illness due to general imperfections and inferiority. In recent years, as high rates of maternal mortality in the U.S. have alarmed researchers, one statistic has been especially concerning: According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), black mothers in the U.S. die at three to four times the rate of white mothers, one of the widest of all racial disparities in women’s health. Many social scientists and medical researchers agree that the problem isn’t race but racism. This lesson explores the impact of black-white disparity in pregnancy-related and infant mortality and addresses factors that contribute to poor birth outcomes. We will discuss how CASA volunteers can disrupt the mechanisms that cause disparities.
