X-WR-CALDESC:'The Impact of Inequity'- Stacy Scott\, PhD\, MPA\nModerator B
eth Cardina\nThroughout the history of America\, blacks were blamed for th
e black and white health disparities – viewed as susceptible to illness du
e to general imperfections and inferiority. In recent years\, as high rate
s of maternal mortality in the U.S. have alarmed researchers\, one statist
ic has been especially concerning: According to the Centers for Disease Co
ntrol (CDC)\, black mothers in the U.S. die at three to four times the rat
e of white mothers\, one of the widest of all racial disparities in women’
s health. Many social scientists and medical researchers agree that the pr
oblem isn’t race but racism. This lesson explores the impact of black-whit
e disparity in pregnancy-related and infant mortality and addresses factor
s that contribute to poor birth outcomes. We will discuss how CASA volunte
ers can disrupt the mechanisms that cause disparities.
